The essentials up top
Uluwatu Temple Bali, known locally as Pura Luhur Uluwatu Temple, is one of the six holiest temples of Bali, the Sad Kahyangan, and the one that guards the southwest.10 The management says historical records place it at least in the 9th century, and that the sage Mpu Kuturan, who arrived in the 11th century, is credited with the idea of village, mountain and sea temples.11,12 Uluwatu was set up as a sea temple, built to turn back harm that comes in from the ocean.13
The name describes the place. The Ministry of Tourism reads ulu as end and watu as rock, a fitting label for a shrine at the rocky tip of a peninsula.14 The same page says a priest named Dang Hyang Nirartha reinforced the temple in the 16th century and is believed to have spent the end of his life here until his moksa.15 A statue inside the precinct honors his role.16
The god worshipped here is Shiva Rudra, and the temple's anniversary, the Piodalan, is celebrated every 210 days according to the Pawukon calendar of Bali.17 A second statue shows Kumbakarna, a warrior of the Ramayana, a hint of the story the evening dance tells a short walk away.18 The rest is scenery: the cliff rises 70 meters from the water.13

Treat the precinct as a place where people pray. The management says the temple keeps functioning as a living religious site, where worshippers still come to pray and present offerings.22 Only authorized personnel and worshippers may enter the restricted temple zones. The visitor paths and the inner courts are different places.23
Rules about walls carry real weight here. Visitors must not sit or climb on the boundary walls, because the cliffs are steep and dangerous.24 The Ministry of Tourism adds that visitors should not climb temple structures and should lower their voices when someone is praying.25 A selfie on a wall is never worth the fall.
Along the paths you will also meet the Alas Kekeran, the sacred forest the management lists among the temple's features.26 The forest and the cliffs share their ground with about 650 long-tailed macaques, animals the management describes as guardians of the site.6,27 They are the reason a hat or a pair of sunglasses needs a plan before you start walking.
The booth prices
The temple opens every day from 07:00 to 19:00.1 The entrance fee is paid at the official booth near the main gate.3 International adults pay IDR 60,000 and international children IDR 40,000, while domestic visitors pay IDR 40,000 for an adult and IDR 30,000 for a child.2 The ticket covers the public visitor areas.29
The temple ticket leaves out parking and the Kecak.4 For the Kecak itself an adult ticket is IDR 150,000 and a ticket for ages 2 to 9 is IDR 75,000; cash is generally what the ticket booth wants.28,31 The management also notes that prices and arrangements may change around ceremonies and public holidays, and recommends checking its site before you travel.32
The sarong and sash come with the ticket, free at the entrance.5 The Ministry describes the entrance ticket the same way, as including the loan of a sarong and shawl.38 Add the evening show and an international adult's budget at the ticket booths is IDR 60,000 plus IDR 150,000, before parking and food.2,28
Which visit fits
The temple is the same for everyone, so the real choice is how you arrive and what you carry.
If I plan to watch the Kecak
Be at the gate before 17:00
The amphitheater gate opens at 16:00, and the management and the Ministry both ask for arrival before 17:00.8,19
If I want the temple's story told
Take a guided visit
One listing sells a temple tour that lasts 2 to 6 hours, led live in English and Indonesian.
If I am wearing a hat
Zip it into a closed bag
The management lists hats among the items monkeys may snatch away.33,34
If I am coming from the beach
Pack a change of clothes
Beachwear and swimwear are not an appropriate temple outfit, and the temple suggests changing before the visit.35,36
If I want the show and a seafood dinner
Look at the Jimbaran sunset trip
A 6-hour trip on this site's listings adds Jimbaran Bay, with the dinner as an option.

The management bans knives and other sharp items, drones unless authorized, and eating inside the temple area.54,53,52 It also asks visitors to leave hats and flashy accessories behind, because monkeys may snatch them away.33,55 A camera needs a firm grip and a phone should go back into a pocket after every photo.
A customary rule closes the temple area to women who are menstruating. The management states it, and the Ministry of Tourism specifies the central area of the temple.56,57 It is a temple custom, and the courteous response is to follow it without debate.
Clothing rules fill a whole page of their own, the dress code guide on this site. The short version is that the sarong and sash are required for every visitor and are provided at the entrance.5 The management calls them a ritual practice that reflects gratitude and humility, and not a tourist requirement.37

The temple suggests one to two hours before sunset to see the cliff from different angles.20

The Kecak begins at 18:00 and finishes at 19:00 each day.8
Sunday, 4 PM
A supervised feeding takes place in front of the Kumba Karna statue every Sunday at 4:00 PM.21
Around 650 macaques live at the temple and about 50 more at Labuan Sait beach, and the caretakers work with the veterinary faculty of Udayana University on their health.6 The management says injured animals get care at the Anom Veterinary Clinic and asks visitors to report a monkey that looks sick or hurt.58,59
Do not carry things where they can be grabbed. The management warns that monkeys may take sunglasses, hats and phones.7 If one does take something, stay calm, do not chase it, do not offer food and ask temple staff for help.60 The monkeys page of this site goes through those rules in order.
Sundays at 4:00 PM bring a supervised feeding at the foot of the Kumba Karna statue.21 Feeding on your own is what the management discourages, since it disrupts the animals' natural behavior.61 Watching from a distance, with the camera zoomed in, is the approach the temple recommends.62

Checklist
The Kecak amphitheater sits inside the precinct, and the gate opens at 16:00, with the show itself on from 18:00 until 19:00 each day.8 The management suggests being at the temple before 5:00 PM, so the cliff views come before the dance.9
Another page from the management says the same from the other side: 6:00 PM is the show time, and arriving at 6:00 PM is already too late.63 The Ministry of Tourism asks for arrival before 17:00 WITA, for a seat and for the sunset.19 Treat 18:00 as the curtain, not as your arrival time.
Between 16:00 and 18:00 there is a window for the walk.8 The temple suggests arriving one to two hours before sunset to look at the cliff from different angles.20 Count the booth and the sarong into that window as well, and leave the loop around the cliff for the golden light.
Uluwatu Temple lies in Pecatu village, in the South Kuta district of Badung Regency.64 By rental vehicle it is about 45 minutes from Ngurah Rai Airport, and the Ministry of Tourism puts the drive from Kuta or Seminyak at about 45 minutes as well.39,46
Leave early at holiday time: traffic thickens in the late afternoon before the show.46 A tour with pickup removes the parking question, and the listings on this site compare several of them, from a bare ticket to a private sunset trip.
On site, the management lists public toilets, first aid, a prayer room, wheelchairs for elderly or disabled visitors, an ATM center and charging points for electric vehicles.65,66,67 The practical gap is the car park: parking is charged on top of the ticket and is not covered by the Kecak ticket either.4,31
