The Kecak is danced on more than one stage on the island. Here is how Uluwatu, Ubud, GWK, Melasti and Tanah Lot differ in time, price and setting, and which tickets to book.

The essentials up top
The Kecak is not tied to one stage. The Ministry of Tourism says that besides Uluwatu the dance can be found at Tanah Lot, the GWK Cultural Park, Pura Dalem Ubud, the Padang Tegal Stage, Batubulan, the Umadewi Stage and more.7 Each stage has its own time, its own price and its own mood, and that is why a search for the Kecak in Bali leads to several different answers rather than one.
The same Ministry names Pura Uluwatu as its pick for watching the Kecak, with a dramatic sunset behind the dancers every day.8 That is a strong recommendation from an official voice. But the best place is not always the most convenient place, and a traveler staying in Ubud has different options from one staying on the Bukit. Think about distance, day of the week and mood before you settle on a stage.
The map on this page shows the main stages together with the airport and the towns around the Bukit. Use it to see how far each one lies from where you sleep. Then read the sections below, which take each stage in turn and say what an evening there is like, what it costs and how to book it. The table and the cards sum it up once you have the picture, and the checklist at the end covers what to confirm before you drive anywhere.

Rupiah amounts and times are the Ministry of Tourism's, except Uluwatu, where they are the temple management's own, and prices are not converted.
At Uluwatu the show is daily, 18:00 to 19:00, with the gate open from 16:00.1 The cliff stage looks out over the Indian Ocean from about 70 m up, and the management ties the performance to the sunset behind the temple.9 An adult ticket is IDR 150,000 on the temple's own list, and a child aged 2 to 9 pays IDR 75,000.10 That sets the benchmark for the other stages: the Ministry's figures for them sit in the same range, as the table below shows, so price alone rarely decides the evening, and the setting does. Pick the backdrop first, then check the cost.
This is the stage for the sunset, and the setting is the draw for most people who come. Up to 1,200 spectators fit into the amphitheater for each show,11 and a crowd of that size is part of the atmosphere. The cost of a big crowd is arrival time: the management wants you there at least an hour ahead of the show.12 Plan the evening around that, and the size of the crowd stops being a worry.
Our other pages cover the Uluwatu evening in detail, from the ticket price to the schedule and the road in. If you have one evening for the Kecak and you are on the Bukit, or willing to drive there, this is the stage to choose. If you would rather be close to your hotel, or you are curious about a smaller courtyard, the next stages are worth a look, and each of them has its own pleasures.
What bookers say
Review counts as listed on the GetYourGuide records for each stage's main ticket; a count shows how many people booked, not which show is better.
A Kecak fire dance in Ubud has a different rhythm. The Ministry names Pura Dalem Taman Kaja (temple), where locals perform the show on Monday and Friday at 7:00 pm, at around Rp100,000 to Rp150,000.2 You can walk to the venue from Monkey Forest Road, or take a local motorcycle taxi; it sits in Ubud's center.13 That makes it easy to combine with a day in town, with no long drive at dusk, and you can walk home afterwards if your hotel is close by.
The most-reviewed Ubud listing is a 1-hour ticket sold for four Ubud venues, including a front-seat option at Sayan and a Sunday and Tuesday show at Pura Dalem Kutuh Kaja. Per the listing the gate stays open from 18:00 to 19:30 and the Kecak begins at 19:00, with arrival at least 30 minutes before. Booking opens at $6 with 3,413 reviews, which makes it the lowest from price in this comparison. Check the venue on your voucher, since the listing says the shows are held at different venues on different days.
Ubud suits a visitor who wants a more traditional stage and a later start. The Ministry describes the Taman Kaja show as more traditional because locals perform it.2 What you give up is the cliff and the sunset, which belong to Uluwatu. If you are staying in Ubud, the drive to Uluwatu takes about 1.5 to 2 hours,16 so choosing a local stage is a perfectly good decision, not a second-best one.

Two more stages sit on the Bukit peninsula. The Ministry lists the Kecak at Garuda Wisnu Kencana every day at 6:30 pm, free for park visitors, with the park entry at Rp125,000 to 150,000 and about 30 minutes from the airport.3 GWK's website gives a daily Kecak at 6pm,36 so check the time on the day, because the sources differ by half an hour, and confirm it with the park before you set off.
The Melasti Beach Kecak dance is the sea stage. The Ministry's Melasti entry gives roughly 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm, priced at Rp150,000 to Rp200,000, which varies with the organizer,4 and says the performances are generally seasonal, so check the schedule before you go.5 The beach lies 16.3 km, about 30 minutes, from the airport.37 From Uluwatu or Jimbaran, a private or rented vehicle gets you there.15 The provincial tourism site adds that Ungasan's customary village runs the beach, following the Tri Hita Karana idea.38
The Melasti ticket listing gives the show time as daily from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM and asks you to arrive before 5:30 PM for seating. Beach entrance and parking are paid separately, and children aged 0 to 9 join free. Booking opens at $7. Melasti and GWK are both on the Bukit, like Uluwatu, so they can work as a plan B if the main stage is full, and an evening on the beach has its own appeal.

Seasonal
Tanah Lot is on the other side of the island, and its Kecak is not held every day. The Ministry lists it generally around sunset in high season, at around Rp100,000 to Rp150,000.6 On the temple's own site the show takes place at De Jukung Resto & Bar, starting at sunset.14 Treat it as a stage to confirm before you plan a drive, and ask whether the show is on for your date. The Ministry lists the show generally around sunset in high season, which is the safest time to expect it.6
A Tanah Lot ticket listing says the stage is about 100 meters from the temple, asks you to check in at least 15 minutes early, and offers a host who speaks English, Indonesian and Japanese. Booking opens at $6, with 318 reviews. The option without a temple ticket needs the temple ticket bought separately. Check which option you pick so that you are not caught out at the gate.
Beyond these, the Ministry also names Batubulan, the Padang Tegal Stage and the Umadewi Stage.7 Schedules at the smaller stages change, and some depend on the season or the day of the week. If a stage's page does not list a time, treat the show as unconfirmed and ask your hotel to phone ahead. A wasted drive at dusk is the worst way to lose an evening, and a phone call beforehand is a cheap insurance.

Stage checklist
The dance itself is the same art wherever you see it. The Ministry describes a circle of about 50 to 60 men, bare-chested and wearing Balinese sarongs, sitting cross-legged around a set of torches in the center.39 A soloist leads the chorus, sets the high and low notes and acts as narrator.40 The chorus of men represents an army of monkeys.41 That is the same on every stage you visit, which makes the dance easy to follow once you know the story.
What changes from stage to stage is everything around the circle: the backdrop, the crowd, the time of day and the price of the seat. A show in an open-air temple court in Ubud and a show on a sea cliff share a story and a sound, yet one has a village feel and the other has an ocean. If you are curious about the story you will be watching, our page on the Kecak story tells it from the first scene to the fire.
If you have the time, see two. A courtyard in the evening in Ubud and a cliff at sunset on the Bukit show the same dance in two quite different lights, and the contrast is worth the second ticket on a longer trip. If you have one evening only, choose by where you are sleeping and by what you want behind the dancers, and let the rest of the island wait for another trip. Whichever stage you choose, arrive early and sit where you can see the whole circle.
Start from your base. Staying in Ubud, choose an Ubud stage and keep the evening unhurried. Staying on the Bukit or in Kuta, Seminyak or Nusa Dua, Uluwatu is the obvious choice and GWK or Melasti the nearby alternatives. Staying on the west coast, Tanah Lot is the stage to check, when it performs, and a sunset there has its own appeal. Whatever your base, give the show your evening and leave the sightseeing for the day.
Then check the day. Uluwatu and GWK are listed daily,1,3 Ubud's Taman Kaja is on Monday and Friday,2 Melasti is generally seasonal5 and Tanah Lot is not held every day.6 That pattern is the quickest way to decide on the day itself. If it is a Monday or a Friday, Ubud is possible; if it is any other evening and you are on the Bukit, Uluwatu is. Phone the venue if the day is a close call.
Last, book what fits. Our own listing sells the Uluwatu show with the temple entry in three options, from $9. The Ubud, Melasti and Tanah Lot tickets are listed on the cards below. Our listing lets you reserve now and pay later, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before. Always read the cancellation line on the page you book, because the terms differ from one ticket to the next, and keep the voucher on your phone.
