1Where are you sleeping?

Uluwatu sits at the far end of the Bukit peninsula, so the road decides the evening. Here are the drive times, the ways to go, and when a tour with pickup is the easier choice.

Uluwatu is a drive with a number attached

Pura Luhur Uluwatu stands in Pecatu village, in the South Kuta district of Badung Regency.5 That is the southern tip of the Bukit peninsula, well away from the beach towns most visitors sleep in. The Ministry of Tourism says Uluwatu is about one hour by road from Ngurah Rai Airport and suggests a taxi from the airport.1 Another Ministry page puts the same trip at about 45 minutes.6

The two numbers do not contradict each other so much as describe different conditions on the road. The Ministry says traffic gets heavy in the late afternoon before the Kecak in holiday season,4 so a 45-minute drive can run longer just when you need it.2 Plan with the longer number and treat the shorter one as a pleasant surprise. You will never regret the extra margin once you reach the gate.

There is a second choice to make as well as the route, and it is the question of who drives. The Ministry says you can go to Denpasar and find a travel agent or an auto rental, and that many rentals also provide motorcycles.1,7 A taxi, a driver, a scooter and a tour with pickup all reach the same gate. What differs is who handles the traffic, who finds the parking, and who waits for you afterwards. Settle that question first and the rest of the planning becomes simple.

Times are the Ministry of Tourism's estimates for the drive, not guarantees; traffic changes them.

From Kuta and Seminyak to the temple

Most visitors start from one of these two. The Ministry says it is about 45 minutes from Kuta or Seminyak by car, motorbike or ride-hailing.2 That is a comfortable number if you leave in the early afternoon and a risky one if you leave at the last minute. The same ministry notes that Seminyak traffic can get very congested at times, which is the sort of detail that stretches a 45-minute drive.10,2

In Kuta, taxis are plentiful and can be rented by the meter or by the hour, and the Ministry says that driving your own car around Kuta beach is not recommended because parking there is very tight.11 For a long evening trip, hiring a taxi by the hour is worth pricing. A driver who waits at the temple also solves the problem of getting back through the dark, when you may not want to look for a ride at the exit.

Think about parking too. The Kecak ticket does not include parking or the area entrance fee,12 so a driver who drops you at the gate and waits somewhere else can be neater than a rented car parked in a crowded lot. If you rent a motorbike, check your licence and your insurance before you leave the shop, and keep the helmet strapped on the bike, not in the amphitheater where the benches fill quickly.

  • Kuta, Seminyak45 min
  • Airport, one pageabout 1 hour
  • Ubud, upper rangeup to 2 hours

Figures are the Ministry of Tourism's and the provincial tourism site's own estimates; the first two are distances to the airport, the last three are drive times to Uluwatu.8,13,2,1,3

From Nusa Dua and Jimbaran

Nusa Dua and Jimbaran are the closest of the resort areas to the Bukit, and neither looks like a long haul on paper. The Ministry says Nusa Dua is 20 to 30 minutes from the Kuta area and 15 minutes from Jimbaran on the main southern road, the Bypass Ngurah Rai.16 The pages we read give no official Nusa Dua to Uluwatu Temple drive time, so build the plan from the hops they do give, and leave a generous margin on top of the sum.

Jimbaran is a useful reference point on the map. It is a 15-minute drive south of the airport and 20 minutes from Legian, Seminyak and Sanur via the toll road.8 Since Uluwatu lies further south again, the drive from Jimbaran is a continuation of the same road rather than a new journey. Several sunset trips use that order in reverse, ending the evening at the beach for dinner, and the optional dinner of one listing follows exactly that pattern.

The practical advice is the same as from anywhere on the peninsula: assume the evening road is slower than the morning one. The management's own plan says exact timing can change with traffic, weather, ceremonies and crowd levels.15 If you are staying in Nusa Dua, leave early enough to have time at the cliff before the gate fills, and treat the first look at the ocean as part of the evening, not a delay.

Out of Ubud: the long way south

Ubud is the farthest of the usual starting points, and the one that needs the most planning. The Ministry of Tourism puts the drive from Ubud to Uluwatu at about 1.5 to 2 hours.3 For a show that begins at 18:00 and has a gate that opens at 16:00,9 that means an early-afternoon departure, and a late lunch in the car or at a stop on the way, not a leisurely afternoon in the rice fields. Pack water and a small snack for the ride, and keep your tickets within reach.

The Ministry suggests breaking the drive with a stop at Garuda Wisnu Kencana or at Padang-Padang Beach.14 The cultural park is a sensible one, since it lies on the way and has its own daily performances.18 Padang-Padang Beach is also widely known as Labuan Sait Beach.19 Either stop gives the driver a rest and gives you a first look at the Bukit before the evening crowd gathers at the temple.

Tours handle this stretch best. A private transfer listing connects Ubud with the south coast, Uluwatu included, and lists 2 hours for the ride. A private sunset tour on Viator lists transfers from Ubud and south Bali accommodations, with the temple, the Kecak and a seafood dinner. A full-day highlights tour says guests staying in Ubud depart earlier. The earlier start is the price of the distance.

Taxi, scooter, driver or tour with pickup

The cheapest way to reach the temple is often the one you arrange yourself, and the easiest is the one somebody else arranges for you. Our ticket listing says pickup is available, with the options and times shown at booking. A sunset-trip listing includes pickup and a driver who speaks English and Indonesian. A small-group listing offers pickup too, with the group capped at 12.

Read what a pickup really means. One temple-tour listing says shared transfers follow a fixed pickup route and timing, while private transfers have flexible pickup times, and both depend on road conditions. A shared route may collect other guests first, so the hotel time is earlier than the drive alone suggests. A private car follows your own timing, though the listing prices differ, so compare them in the calculator on this page before you decide.

A scooter is the freedom option and the one that needs the most care. The Ministry notes that many rentals provide motorcycles,7 and in holiday season the late-afternoon traffic is heavy.4 If you are not an experienced rider on busy roads, hire a driver for this evening and ride the scooter on a quiet morning instead. The show is worth arriving at relaxed, and not worth arriving at stressed.

Travel checklist

Before the car leaves the hotel

Sort out the road3

  • Leave in the early afternoon, not at the last minute
  • Expect heavy traffic in the late afternoon in holiday season
  • Book a pickup or a driver for the return too

When you reach the gate3

  • Cash for parking, which the Kecak ticket does not include
  • Your voucher or tickets, shown at the counter
  • A closed bag for phone and sunglasses

The ride home after the show

The show ends at 19:00 and the temple closes at 07:00 PM,9,20 so the crowd leaves around the same time. Decide on the ride before you go in, and write the driver's number in your phone before you walk through the gate. A driver who has agreed to wait, a tour that brings you back, or a ride booked in advance all beat looking for a taxi while the stands empty around you. A short message when the show ends saves a long search in the car park.

The distances are the same in reverse. It is about 45 minutes back to Kuta or Seminyak by the Ministry's estimate,2 and 1.5 to 2 hours back to Ubud.3 Add the time to walk out, to find your driver and to leave the lot, and to stop for a snack if the day has been long. If you have a dinner booked in Jimbaran, tell the restaurant that your arrival depends on the show and on the road.

Some trips fold the dinner into the evening. The sunset trip listing makes a seafood dinner at Jimbaran Bay an optional extra after the Kecak, and Jimbaran is known for its beachfront seafood restaurants.21 That is a sensible way to end the day, and our dinner page compares the trips that include it. Tell the driver the plan in advance so that the table and the car are ready when you are.
